The Martina Arroyo Foundation is delighted to announce the continuance of the Dr. David Farrar Internship for Assistant Stage Director for the 2010 Prelude to Performance® season. The purpose of this grant is to provide an opportunity for an individual, at the beginning of his or her directing career, to gain experience working with recognized professionals of the national and international opera world.
Now in its fourth year, the Dr. David Farrar Assistant Stage Director intern will play a key role in the organization and implementation of four fully-staged and costumed operatic performances in the original language, complete with orchestral accompaniment. This six-week program takes place in New York City.
Basic Responsibilities
Please note that the duties described below are minimum requirements. The stage director’s decisions in all instances listed below will be final. Duties may be adjusted if mutually agreed upon by the Stage Director(s) and the Assistant Stage Director. If the AD is unable to provide indicated preliminary and projected pre-rehearsal period information as requested, the AD must document the date of the request and the response in his or her daily log.
Pre-Rehearsal Duties
- Obtain and move into a local residence at least one week (7 days) prior to first day of grant and contact Ms. Arroyo upon arrival for further instructions.
- Work with the stage director(s) to compile and submit preliminary contact sheets and cast lists, to be completed no later than one day prior to the “meet and greet.”
- Prepare the production/blocking book as directed by the stage director(s) or manager, as well as, any additional assignments required by the stage director(s).
- Obtain from the stage director(s) and compile the costume plot, prop list, make-up/hair requirements, rehearsal schedule, set models, rendering, act/scene timings, curtain placement, and light cue placement annotations.
- Compile for the stage director(s) the number and requirements of the chorus and any supernumerary participants.
Rehearsal Duties
- Attend all staging rehearsals and performances, maintain the blocking book and notes as required by the stage director(s).
- Convey and disseminate any staging and production notes, or revisions of the same, to all concerned in a timely manner.
- Direct scenes and work with singers at the stage director’s request, as well as, handle any post-production work that may be required.
- After each rehearsal or performance, meet with the stage manager and director(s) to update production information, as well as, meet with any and all production and musical staff as needed
General
- Acknowledge The Martina Arroyo Foundation, Inc. and the Dr. David Farrar grant in all bios, interviews, and other activities whenever possible.
- Represent the Foundation and the grant in an appropriate manner at the request of Ms. Arroyo and the Foundation’s executive director.
Ideally, we would like for the internship to begin on Monday, May 24 and to end on Friday, July 23, 2010. However, we can be flexible regarding the timing.
